Manufacturer-Approved Accident Repair
What it means for your vehicle

When a manufacturer approves a bodyshop to repair their vehicles, they are not giving out a badge. They are auditing that bodyshop against their own repair standards, confirming it has the right equipment, the trained technicians and access to the repair data required to restore their vehicle correctly.

What manufacturer approval actually requires

Manufacturer approval is not self-certified. Each brand sets its own requirements and audits approved repairers against them. An approved repairer follows the method the manufacturer specifies. Uses the parts the manufacturer specifies,  and is checked, regularly, to make sure that continues to be true.

Finesse Accident Repair Centres holds manufacturer approvals across our centres in Bracknell, Dorking and Redhill.

Protect your vehicle and your warranty

Manufacturer approval requirements vary between brands but typically include all of the following:

  • Specialist equipment: The bodyshop must have the specific tools the manufacturer requires for their vehicles. This includes measuring and alignment systems, welding equipment, bonding and riveting tools, diagnostic hardware and, for EVs, high-voltage isolation equipment.

  • Trained technicians:Technicians must complete manufacturer-specific training and maintain that certification. This is not a one-time qualification. It requires ongoing updates as vehicles change.

  • Access to OEM repair data: Approved repairers have access to the manufacturer’s own repair procedures for each vehicle. Non-approved repairers work from general industry guidance, which may not reflect the specific requirements of a particular model.
  • Genuine parts:Approved repairers use genuine OEM parts. This matters most for structural components, safety systems and anything that affects how your vehicle performs after the repair.

  • Regular auditing: Approvals are maintained through periodic audits by the manufacturer or their appointed body. A repairer that falls below the required standard loses the approval.

Approved repairer versus non-approved: what is the actual difference?

For straightforward cosmetic repairs on older vehicles, the difference may be minimal. For modern vehicles with aluminium construction, advanced driver assistance systems, electric or hybrid powertrains, or active manufacturer warranties, it is significant.

Repair Methods

A manufacturer-approved repairer follows the manufacturer’s own specified procedure for your vehicle.

A non-approved repairer follows general industry methods, which may not match the manufacturer’s specifications for your vehicle’s construction, materials or safety systems.

Parts

Approved repairers use genuine OEM parts for structural and safety-critical components.

Non-approved repairers may use aftermarket or pattern parts.

Structural Repair

Approved repairers have the specific equipment and repair data required for your vehicle’s construction.

A non-approved repairer may lack the equipment or repair data for aluminium, composite or high-strength steel components.

ADAS Recalibration

Approved repairers carry out pre and post-repair diagnostic scanning and sensor recalibration as standard.

A non-approved repairer may not have the equipment or manufacturer data to calibrate your specific vehicle’s systems correctly.

EV and high voltage

Approved EV repairers are trained in EV-specific safety procedures and high-voltage isolation for each approved brand.

A non-approved repairer may not have the required EV training or equipment for your vehicle’s battery and high-voltage systems

Warranty Protection

Repairs carried out to manufacturer specification by an approved repairer protect your warranty.

Non-OEM methods or parts may affect warranty coverage for the systems involved in the repair.

Repair Authenticity

Approved repairers have the specific equipment and repair data required for your vehicle’s construction.

A non-approved repairer may lack the equipment or repair data for aluminium, composite or high-strength steel components.

What you receive after an approved repair at Finesse

Every vehicle repaired at Finesse to manufacturer-approved standards is returned with the following documentation.

Finesse| An interior shot of our show room
  • Manufacturer repair documentation: Where the manufacturer runs a formal repair guarantee or authenticity scheme, you will receive that documentation on completion. The specific documentation varies by brand.

  • Pre and post-repair diagnostic report: Records the state of all electronic systems before the repair began and confirms all systems are operating correctly on completion. Used to verify nothing was missed and no new fault codes are present.

  • ADAS calibration: Confirms that any ADAS systems affected by the repair have been recalibrated to manufacturer specification. Relevant to insurance claims, resale and future repair history.

  • Repair record: A full record of all work carried out, parts used and methods applied. Useful for warranty claims, resale and any future repair that requires knowledge of previous work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does manufacturer-approved accident repair mean?

A: A manufacturer-approved accident repair centre has been formally assessed and authorised by that manufacturer to repair their vehicles. The approval requires specific equipment, trained technicians, access to OEM repair data and the use of genuine parts. Approved repairers are audited regularly to maintain their status. Finesse holds approvals from Audi, BMW, MINI, SEAT, CUPRA, Skoda, Tesla, Volkswagen, Volvo and AION across our centres in Bracknell, Dorking and Redhill.

Q: Does using a manufacturer-approved repairer protect my warranty?

A: Yes. Using a manufacturer-approved repairer is the most reliable way to protect your manufacturer warranty after an accident. Approved repairers use genuine OEM parts and follow the manufacturer’s specified repair procedures, both of which are requirements for warranty compliance. Non-OEM parts or non-approved methods used in a repair can affect warranty coverage for the systems involved.

Q: Do I have to use my insurer’s recommended bodyshop?

A: No. You have the right to choose where your vehicle is repaired, even on a fault claim through your own insurer. Your insurer’s recommended network repairer may not hold the manufacturer approval for your vehicle. If you want your repair completed to manufacturer standards and to receive the Repair Authenticity Certificate, insist on a manufacturer-approved repairer.

Q: Is Finesse approved to repair my specific vehicle?

A: Finesse holds manufacturer approvals for Audi, BMW, MINI, SEAT, CUPRA, Skoda, Tesla, Volkswagen, Volvo and AION. Contact us to confirm which approval covers your specific model.

Q: Why does manufacturer approval matter, especially for modern vehicles?

A: Modern vehicles, particularly those with aluminium construction, advanced driver assistance systems or electric and hybrid powertrains, require repair methods, equipment and data specific to the manufacturer and sometimes to the model. General bodyshop techniques developed for steel-bodied vehicles are not adequate for these repairs. Manufacturer approval confirms the repairer has what is needed for your specific vehicle.
