Why aluminium repair is different

Most modern vehicles from Audi, BMW, Tesla and Volvo use aluminium extensively in their body structures. Some use full aluminium unibody construction. Others use aluminium in specific structural zones alongside high-strength steel. In either case, the repair requirements are distinct from a conventional steel vehicle.

Aluminium cannot be repaired alongside steel. The two metals react chemically, and contamination of aluminium with steel particles causes corrosion that develops over time and is not visible until it is well advanced. Dedicated tooling, a separate working environment and trained technicians are not optional for aluminium repair. They are the minimum required to do it correctly.

Aluminium also responds differently under heat and impact. It work-hardens when shaped, meaning improper reshaping attempts can weaken the panel rather than repair it. And because many aluminium structural components are bonded as well as welded, repairs require the correct adhesive systems and application methods alongside the metalwork.

How we carry out aluminium car body repairs

Every aluminium repair at Finesse follows the same structured process, regardless of which centre carries it out or which vehicle is involved.

  • Damage assessment: Your vehicle is inspected to determine the full extent of the aluminium damage, including any underlying structural impact not visible from the surface. For vehicles with aluminium-intensive construction, we also confirm the correct repair method for your specific make and model using manufacturer repair data. A pre-repair diagnostic scan is carried out where the damage is near electronic or ADAS systems.

  • Repair or replacement decision: Not all aluminium damage requires panel replacement. Where the structure is intact and the damage is within the repair threshold for your vehicle, reshaping, bonding or welding is carried out. Where replacement is required, genuine OEM aluminium panels are sourced to ensure correct fitment and structural compliance. We advise on this clearly before any work begins.

  • Aluminium repair in a dedicated environment: All aluminium work is carried out in a separate area of the workshop, away from steel repair operations. Dedicated aluminium tools are used throughout: no steel tools, no shared equipment. For structural aluminium repairs involving bonding, the correct manufacturer-specified adhesive systems are applied in the right sequence. For welding, MIG and TIG techniques are applied to the correct specification for your vehicle’s construction.

  • Refinishing: Aluminium surfaces require specific preparation before paint is applied. This includes the correct etch primer and paint systems compatible with aluminium. Finesse uses manufacturer-approved paint systems to ensure colour accuracy and a finish that matches the original across the repaired area and surrounding panels.

  • Post-repair checks: Following the repair, panel alignment is checked and a full quality inspection is carried out. Where ADAS systems have been affected by the repair, recalibration is completed to manufacturer specification before the vehicle is returned. A calibration certificate is provided where applicable.
